Unleash Your Inner Superhero

During Jeff Pulver’s 140 Conference last week I got the idea for a video project after listening to Christopher Penn’s talk “Awaken Your Superhero” where he discussed how social media is giving everyone superhero powers. It was one of my favorite presentations of the day and thanks to Sean Zinsmeister @SZinsmeister, I am able to share it with you below.

My idea for the video (and you probably guessed it by now), was to ask several of the conference attendees what their power would be if they were a superhero. What I received was a mix of serious, scary and downright hilarious powers (See Shwen Gwee’s power).

As Chris pointed out during his presentation, with the power of social media, the superhero is YOU. Each and every one of us has super powers, or in some cases, wish we did (Chris Brogan told me he would like to fly. Hell, he probably already does. He does everything else so well).

Uncle Ben told Spiderman “With great power comes great responsibility.” Social media has given each and every one of us great power. It’s just a matter of unleashing that power and, as Chris put it, break free from that marketing mindset of “how can I sell more shit to people that they don’t want” and instead think of about what responsiblities we all have as social media superheros to truly make a difference.

    I was listening to 140 by livestream on a home inspection and Chris Penn's was the one presentation that I actually stepped aside to hear without disruption. I was inspired by it, too. You asked me what my power would be yesterday and I am still working on an answer to that one….tough Q! Great to get to know you yesterday!

    Definitely one of my favorite. Obviously since I was motivated to make that video! But seriously, his points were so true. We all have the responsibility to do good with our “powers.” Social media has given us all some power to make that possible. Very inspiring indeed!
